Yes but the courses on the inside have to be undertaken within a certain time-frame. If the sentencing for that particular offence does not attract that length of sentence then the judge cannot sentence him to it - so he will have to do the course on the out. He'll enjoy sharing his nasty little secrets with like-minded and under-sentenced perverts.......

The trial judge does not set sentencing limits - that is for 'the Government' et al.

as a rule of thumb - what length of sentence do you think he should/would have got?

Check what he was convicted of and then check on the CPS website in relation to sentencing guidelines for that offence. Possibly months but I am stuck into W&C trial at the moment so can't look.
