  • Rape convictions on the up

    http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/topstories/4423427.Rape_conviction_rate_rises_in_Hounslow_tha nks_to_legal_team/

Specialist lawyers working on rape cases in Hounslow have helped police achieve the second highest conviction rate in the capital.

Nick Coates, the borough crown prosecutor, said the figures showed victims could be confident their attackers would be brought to justice, and should not suffer in silence.

A total of 62.5 per cent of 24 rapes in Hounslow last year ended with a successful prosecution, up from 60 per cent in 2007-08 and 55.6 per cent in 2006-07.

The rate for the whole of London last year was 47 per cent.

Mr Coates said: “I think it’s down to the fact we have a specialist team dealing with all rape cases.

We have three specialist lawyers, and when a rape case comes in it is allocated to one of those lawyers, and therefore you get continuity.

“Their aim is to make it as straight forward and least painful as possible for victims to give evidence to the best of their ability.”

The development of DNA evidence has also contributed to the rise in convictions, but prosecutors attribute Hounslow’s success to the fact it has three lawyers dedicated to rape cases – more than many other London boroughs.

Mr Coates said Hounslow was “lucky” to have the team, as well as good support from police.

He said: “What we aim to do is ensure there is a confidence at a very early stage.

“The team at Hounslow police that runs the cases there and looks after witnesses do a very good job indeed and have much credit for the figures that we’ve seen over the last three years.

“People are beginning to understand we do take these offences seriously and the courts take them seriously as well.”

Sending a message to rape victims, he said: “Please don’t be afraid to come forward, we will do everything we can to support victims of offences of this nature to make sure we can get a conviction.”

Of course it's a good idea to have specialists.
Equally it would be a good idea if it was made easier for the accused to have a specialist lawyer. From my own case I now know how hard it is to find, then change to a specialist.
There should be advice to all people accussed of rape at the police station for the necessity of choosing a specialist, and given how easy it is to let off the guilty,or to convict the innocent there should be more funding for legal aid in these cases.A defence on the cheap is no good, and we don't hear about cuts to the CPS budget for the prosecution.

is that 62% of cases that go to court or 62% of reported cases? i can't see how they can go from 6% to 62%. it is impossible that so many cases can have such strong evidence. i don't think bumping up convictions is the answer. so many people do not report because they know there is not enough evidence and as much as that means guilty people are free to reoffend it is how our law works.

I would think that it is 62% that reach the courts result in a conviction - not 62% of reported rapes.

False allegations is the biggest obstacle in getting genuine cases to court. If there were not so many liars prepared to falsely accuse people then more reported rapes would result in convictions.

It is not surprising that the police sometimes do not take allegations seriously because of the amount of liars that make false complaints.

My ex partner mentally abused me to the point of me seriously considering suicide. a good friend persuaded me to go to the police because he was harassing me - the officer looked very sceptical at first until my friend piped up.

I know how that made me feel so for somebody who has genuinely been raped to be met with the same reception must be dreadful.

Blame the liars - I believe that these are the ones responsible.

My understanding is that is was 62% of rapes that resulted in a charge (not necessarily a trial, as they can get thrown out before trial)....but this ios just for one small area of London.
It's very difficult to actually get reliable figures on rape statistics - they vary wildly, from 6% to 62%!!! I think the main problem is the very nature of the crime - usually committed in private with only 2 people present: the victim and the rapist. Hence very difficult to prove, especially after a period of time has passed. The Government have taken steps to lower the burden of proof required, but this in itself is open to abuse by certain unscrupulous individuals. Very difficult situation!
