The solicitor might have something useful to add to, especially as he seems to think that your son needed specialist help at interview. I'm not diminishing the help and support that his Dad was able to give, but experts know the tricks that the police try to pull at interview and can ward them off. It sounds as though his solicitor is on the ball and will be able to answer your question more fully.
