Trial Starts Tomorrow What To Expect?

Hi All,

I have a few questions if anyone can help answer our questions please?

What day do the character witness usually stand?
what day will my partner usually have his say?
And also how long does the days usually last for?

Character witnesses usually after defendant but sometimes before - but not before or during prosecution witnesses.

Defendant usually gives his evidence last.

Here's an example of a timetable:

Legal arguments
Jury selected and empanelled
Complainant in - usually ABE interview played first
Complainant examined and cross-examined
Comp's witnesses including police
Experts if there are any

Legal arguments / application for various evidence or no case to answer (no case to answer rarely works)

Defendant and his/her witnesses in no particular order but usually def is last

More legal arguments (sometimes)

Pros closing speech
Defence closing speech
Legal discussion re directions to the jury - although this can happen during the course of the trial

JSU - Judge's Summing Up

Jury out

Occasionally jurors come back with various questions - could relate to anything in the evidence

Jury in for unanimous verdict

If no unanimous verdict judge gives majority direction - this can happen after 2 hours and 15 minutes but often longer

Verdicts - if jury is "hung" then usually a retrial is ordered

The business of the photographers and reporters. Although some are pictured and reported on this does not happen to everyone. There was (I think) another reason why that happened to the OP on the link CH has provided.

Try not to get to paranoid (easy for me to say I know) about the press.

We had a member here a few years back who decided he would wear dark glasses, an obvious wig and a hat so he wouldn't be recognised. He may not have been recognised but he would have drawn attention to himself - plus if the media found out his ID they would have had a field day.

its the first day of the trial today and they said it should be done with by Thursday, what do you think? is this a good thing?

It's neither a good thing nor a bad thing. That just suggests that there is little evidence to cross-examine on

It was a long day yesterday 6 1/2 hours in total, no press upto now but will let you know what happens today.

My partners barrister was really really good and caught the accuser out loads where she just didn't know what to say with lots of delayed answers
