Could an individual who didn't want to stand up in court still make a statement to be read out or would it not stand?

Statements can be agreed and read out to the jury, however, unless there is no good reason for their absence they are more likely than not to be ordered to attend. Should that happen they may well be treated as "hostile" which might not be good for the defence, when they are called
