My mother was born in a town that used to be called Breslau and it was in East German during the war - it is now part of Poland and is now called Wroclaw. I had always been told she was German. She died when I was small so I didn't get to know her well. The people who brought me up used to bang on to me about the Germans and the war and the Jews, as though my mother was responsible for all of that. I think my adoptive mother was jealous of her.

I was bullied at school because of my name (it is clearly not English) and I was called Hitler's daughter and a "Nazi".

When I was old enough I tried to find my mother's family - unfortunately I couldn't find them but I did get her birth certificate and found that she was actually Polish!

So all that rubbish about me being a Nazi was a waste of time anyway. How stupid some people are. Even now when people introduce me to others I still get idiots goose-stepping around with their finger under their nose pretending to be Hitler.

They think it's funny. Actually it's not. Sad people!

One of the reasons we are looking to move house is because our eldest has been bullied on the school bus. Apparently some kids have been telling him that his Dad is gay (not an insult, but not true either!) and that I am an Orange C*nt. (no idea where they have got that one from! No fake tan here....)

And people think children never make stuff up or tell lies about serious things? Don't make me laugh.

One of the boys who used to throw stones at me and spit on me had a mother who had an odd interest in "the Germans".

Had I known my mother was Polish at that time maybe that would not have happened to me but then I am stuck with my first name. But then maybe if it had not, I would not stick up for those who are being badly treated as I do now. I've always been one to do that.

I'm sorry you still come up against prejudice like that though, and all because of your name...it's scary that people can be so bigoted in our supposedly "tolerant" age.

Kids can be really mean because they have fun until they get it themselves.. grrr. I was bullied for being overweight and I just wanna jump on them and crash them! hehehe but thats where I learned a lot of patient and have a good self control!

Saffron, oh it is cruel of these kids. In my days you can never say anything about other kids parents or I guess in my culture I think as parents whatever they are should be treated with respect. A move would definitely be good. Does your kid welcome it?

us too. slap on the butt or belt is used. am not very naughty, only once or twice but more to get the important message across that you did something really wrong and especially if you hurt someone or lied.

But it doesnt really hurt physically as my father made sure it is the fact that you were subjected to the punishment that would hurt your pride and learn from it.

That was an acceptable punishment; nobody complain about you to any government agency. It is accepted that it is parents' responsibility to discipline their kids.

Have you found any family in Poland?

Few years ago I haved neigbours. They were around 80 years old. The women was Irish and the gentelmen was Polish. I was talking to them and once that women told me that the Polish gentelmen never been in Poland after IIWW. She told me that he haved brothers and sisters in Poland. He didnt know what was going on with them cos when he was send to Siberia by russians all contacts just stopped. He came to UK with other people and he settled here. Imagine, he dosent have Polish or Britsh passport, no id at all

So. I asked him if he want me to find his family in Poland, and he said thats impossible because they probably died at war. I said that always is worth to try. After few weeks I managed to find his brother And after xxxxx years he visited his family in Poland

yeah true.. i know it is unacceptable these days.. times have moved on.. but then it was more symbolic.. but yes it is very seldom back home now that fathers use it. People my age is another era of parets who are now reading books on parenthood on how to discipline child. Although, we seems to be producing more kids who think they can talk back to their parents. My sister was shocked when her teenage daughter said something to her..not nasty but as if she is her equal. What a changing world!
