As you were 'only' arrested but not charged this wil not show up on a normal crb search but it will come up on a enhanced check. Hopefully the job description will state which is required.

Don't sweat too much about it, consider the number of arrests the police are making every day for all types of offences, if it comes up just say that whenever a woman makes a sexual assault allegation, true or not, the police are obliged to arrest and question the person who is accused.

If you really are anxious to get this removed I would suggest tryng a carefully thought out and worded letter to your MP copied to the Chief Constable of the arresting force.

Interestingly and worryingly, on this theme, I was recently asked, whilst in the process of getting a house insurance quote, if I'd ever been arrested

SO's have terrible trouble getting any kind of insurance - house insurance is usually trebled. We queried this and their answer was that the insurance backers didn't like their money being used for this type of offender.

You can be a mass murderer - that's fine ............. no hike on your premium.

I've had that exact problem. Most refused point blank to insure, and there is a list of "specialists" which CAB gave me, but most on it said We'll get back to you, and never did. It's impossible to be insured, so you have to take a chance and not declare it.
God forbid we had say an electrical fire, I'd like to see how the insurance could say my "conviction" had anything to do with it. Tempting to declare it and watch them try to wriggle in the event of a claim, but sadly all refused.
Car insurance, strangely, doesn't seem to be affected. My insurance went up from £55 a month to £59, and that was due mostly to a change in address. Either that or the foreign call centre didn't understand what I was telling them!

I take it they didn't ask you when you re-newed your car tax?! They didn't the first time with us and then we did it online ........

Hmm, never had that problem. Just took MoT, logbook, insurance cert in to Post Office. No one there has the right to ask, in my opinion, about convictions which may affect insurance. All the PO staff are entitled to do is ensure the papers are genuine and in date.
If I got asked such intrusive questions for car tax, I'd say they're overstepping their authority.

good sidestep! Doesn't apply anymore to me - I don't drive!!

I do find it totally unfair that if an SO went to live in someone elses house the homeowner would have their insurance hiked.

... or worse still, not be able to insure. The horrifying fact is that this doesn't just apply to SOs; it applies technically to anyone staying in the property, ie for a weekend visit. If your visitor has a conviction for anything, and you have a fire, you can bet your bottom dollar the insurance company will use that to try to wriggle out of paying.

I never thought to let our home insurance co know. We have had the same policy since before R's conviction. I didn;t even think about it until I made a claim (our water tank had burst) and they asked me. They prevaricated about it, but apparently because we had taken the police out prior to accusation and conviction, they honoured it. Of course it means we now cannot move to a different insurer, but they haven't raised our premiums....

After stirring the pot re insurance companies I must just put in a good word for one.

About 10 years ago my cottage subsided a bit and the company paid out just over £20k to have this rectified. I did feel a twinge of guilt because this was further movement to what had obviously previously occurred prior to moving in 30 years ago, however in those days they didn't ask you to declare this so I didn't

Of course now they have me over a barrel as I couldn't possibly get insurance anywhere else but to their credit they still insure me and only put the annual premium up by the cost of living index.

The name of this honest company: Ecclesiastical Insurance Office; perhaps a case of practising what they preach (and it wasn't them who asked re. arrests it was a cold caller from Barclays)

Apologies to JGWAW for the hijack

Maybe your insurance company thought they'd better continue to insure you before your house subsided any further and got even closer to the "other side."

Of course they may also be hoping to recoup some of the 20K, but at the present premiums I would need to live for another 80 or so years before they got all their money back

Maybe they think you are a hopeless case, and some cash back is better than none?!
(don't mean that in a nasty way, BTW!)

I had an interesting conversation when I could insure this place. I have huge trees all round me - lots of them - they wanted to know what sort. I have no idea there are too many different sorts all about 60-80 foot tall. It really doesn't matter what sort it is if it falls on the place does it?!

Good job they're checked every year I suppose.
