  • NFA after 4 weeks on remand. Not coping with day-to-day life. Help urgently needed.

Hi this is a message from a very concerned sister.

My brother was remanded for 4 weeks following a false allegation. After 4 weeks the girlfr decided to come clean "it has gone far enough" and told the police that she had lied. She is bailed pending further investigation. We're assuming that she will walk away from destroying our lives without any action being taken.

Whatever the outcome is, she has totally broken my brother. Sharing a prison wing with murderers, sex-offenders, rapists and child abusers as an innocent man is something that nobody should go through. He is incredibly depressed and we need to find help for him. Are there any specific helplines where he can talk to someone? Can he apply for counselling on the NHS? Any support groups for people who have gone through similar?

    Hi Sandy

I'm really sorry to hear what has happened to your brother, I can imagine how you are all feeling

Having admitted she lied I would sincerely hope she will not walk away from this.
I would start by taking your brother to his Doctor and I would go with him so he has someone there to support him and ask him to be referred for counselling
and perhaps some medication. There is a link here with some info - http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/stress-...unselling.aspx

    FASO have a helpline - http://www.false-allegations.org.uk/#

You said your brother received a NFA - that should be no crimed as the only crime committed has been against him.

    Take care

    Izzy

Welcome to the forum , Sandy. I'm so sorry for you and your brother. To damage someone in this way is unbelievable.

I think the first step, if he hasn't done so already is for him to go to his GP and ask for councilling. Medication can also help for short periods to get over the worst. I've just come across this site which is London against Injustice - they'd be worth contacting even if you're not in the London area. http://www.londonagainstinjustice.co.uk/

I'm giving you the link to a list of different help-lines. It would be worth you phoning around several to find the most appropriate/helpful
      http://www.patient.co.uk/displayCategory/16777330

He may also be eligible for fianacial compensations from CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority ) http://www.justice.gov.uk/victims-and-witnesses/cica
I know that some people who have been in the same position as your brother have. There may be a time limit on this so though he might think that money won't help, it could help him to pay for private therapy, retraining if he's lost his job or re-localising if that's desirable.

When he's feeling stronger he may want to look into taking legal action. I'm not sure how this works and perhaps someone else could advise.

Obviously, he needs your love and support and that of everyone around him just as he would if he'd had a serious accident. There are members who have been in very similar situations, so keep coming back for advice and support.

      Big hugs

Thank you for the links & advice.
He has a GP appointment, my worry is that it is too little too late.
Will give him the links & see how we progress. I'll keep you updated. Thank you for the support!

A good place to start might be: The National Federation of Miscarriage of Justice Campaign and Support Organisations http://www.unitedagainstinjustice.org.uk/

It may take him a while to even think he wants to recover from his ordeal and this may be the greatest hurdle and where he'll need the most help.
The human body and spirit can do tremendous things in terms of healing given the right help and support.
Don't be in a hurry and never give up.

          Good luck
