  • Cliff Richard wins damages for defamation from the BBC

The success of Cliff Richard’s defamation action against the BBC may have implications for those falsely accused (and it was noteworthy how quickly Laura Kuensberg(?) changed the subject when he mentioned ‘false accusers’ in his interview with her)

The judge’s ruling that the BBC were wrong in publishing his name before arrest or charge occurred could become case law and [quote] it will be a brave editor who does this in the future [unquote]

Many of those falsely accused are not celebrities and won’t be newsworthy but nevertheless it is a common concern expressed on the forum that the details will get into the local press and so Cliff’s action may bring some reassurance and of course it has brought the whole scandal of FA’s into the forefront of media attention (despite Laura’s best efforts!)

    Well said Casehardened

It will be very hard for the media to publish stores about people who have been arrested for ANY crime if this stands up as case law. The Dailymail are trying to run a scare story saying if "Cliffs Law" is allowed then it will restrict peoples freedom of speech. We all know there story is rubbish and all they are trying to do is keep the right to publish lurid unfounded stories.

Excellent outcome for a man who had been to hell and back over the last few years and hopefully a change in attitude by the press!

It was not the revealing his name so much as the way it was done. To have news crews hovering over his home in a helicopter, is way over the top. Trial by Media again, who ever is responsible should be sacked.
