I've asked the question in a sols and barristers FB group. How strange. Maybe he had to contribute, although saying that, surely he wouldn't be entitled to a penny.......

I'd imagine it's because his assets were probably frozen and so he couldn't pay for representation. The same thing happened with Op Cotton.
