  • Should people accused of rape be named by the press?

I am a journalism student from Bournemouth University doing a thesis on people that have been accused of rape.

I would be interested in talking to anyone that has had the misfortune of being accused of a sex crime, which was subsequently reported in the press. (local or national media)

I will be talking to lawyers, ethics experts and journalists themselves but would also like to hear from anyone who has had first-hand experience of being "named".

    Many Thanks,

    Katie Blackbourn

hi kate just to let you no when and who gets reported in the press is bad enough but when you get the press writing absolute b/s is even worse its a harrowing experience and shouldn't be allowed especialy when they put a photo in as well how do you compete against a paper they never want to no the truth, the only thing there good at is being as bad as the accuser writing b/s

        Dear Katie

whilst I all in favour of reasearch into this field, as it is only by knowing more about the problem that it can be properly addressed, I feel strongly about how such reasearch is conducted.

Due to the sensetive nature of the subject material any questioning of victims need to done in a very careful manner, with a strong awareness of the mental damage that has been caused by the allegations.

Additionally, there need to be firm security protocols in place to assure the privacy of individuals who have already suffered at the hands of the media.

Perhaps the best way for you to go about contacting the people you want to talk to is to approach one of the support organisations such as Mankind, FASO or FACT. These organisations will be aware of the correct approach and of people who are in a fit condition to be interviewed about their experiances

        Regards

        Val
