sorry me again, question re Acting on behalf of my son
You can get a cheap "Power of Attorney" form online. He has to sign it too. This will give you authority to act on his behalf in whichever circumstances that are laid out in the form
so not just a case of writing something on a bit of paper and getting him to sign it then? we would have to pay for it and it can take 10 weeks or something?

you can go to your local firm of solicitors and get a power of attorney done pretty sharpish. no need to wait so long.

Getting your son to write a note would work in the situation for instance, if he names you as his "rep" to the solicitor for purposes of his appeal/ trial - between him and the solicitor only.
He would have to write a letter to the sol authorising him to allow you to act as his rep / mouthpiece as it were. You giving him something to sign may not be enough unless he is illiterate.
If you are to take over his financial affairs then you would need to get a Power of Attorney. A solicitor doing this will cost you. Doing it yourself and just getting a solicitor (a notary - not the defence sol) to sign the PoA should do it. You will probably be charged for the notary to sign but it would probably be cheaper than asking the defence sol.
You could of course ask that nice Mr "Google" and see what he comes up with!
